Should You Repair or Replace Your Laptop? (Honest Guide for Malaysians)
The 50% rule, age, specs and real costs — how to make the right call

Your laptop breaks down and the repair quote comes in at RM350. Your friend says just buy a new one. The repair shop says fix it. Who's right?
The truth is: it depends. Here's an honest, no-nonsense framework to help you decide — based on what we see every day at Fix IT Sukil.
The 50% Rule
This is the simplest starting point. If the repair costs more than 50% of what your laptop is currently worth, replacing is worth considering.
Example:
Your laptop's current resale value: RM800
Repair quote: RM200 → Repair it (25% of value)
Repair quote: RM500 → Borderline (62% of value — consider replacing)
This rule isn't perfect, but it's a solid gut check before you go deeper.
Factors That Favour Repairing
1. The laptop is less than 4 years old Modern laptops are built to last 6–8 years with proper maintenance. If yours is under 4 years old and has decent specs, repairing almost always makes financial sense.
2. The problem is a known, fixable component Screen cracked? Hinge broken? Battery dead? Keyboard not working? These are straightforward part replacements with predictable costs. You're not throwing money into the unknown.
3. You have specific software or setup If your work depends on specific software, files, or a custom setup that would take days to rebuild, the hidden cost of a new laptop is much higher than the price tag suggests.
4. The specs still meet your needs An i5 or i7 with 8GB RAM and an SSD can handle office work, Zoom calls, and web browsing comfortably in 2026. You don't need to upgrade just because newer models exist.
Factors That Favour Replacing
1. The laptop is more than 6–7 years old Ageing laptops often have multiple things failing at once. You fix the battery today, the screen cable goes next month. At some point, you're putting good money into a depreciating asset.
2. It uses a hard disk drive (HDD) and upgrading isn't possible Some older laptops don't support SSD upgrades due to their motherboard design. If you can't upgrade the storage, the laptop will always feel slow regardless of what else you fix.
3. The motherboard is damaged Motherboard repairs can be done but they're expensive and carry risk. If the motherboard is the issue and your laptop is over 5 years old, replacement is usually smarter.
4. It can't run current software If your laptop can no longer run Windows 11, can't handle your company's new software, or struggles with basic video calls — it's a specs problem, not a repair problem.
The Repairs Almost Always Worth Doing
Regardless of laptop age, these repairs typically offer strong value:
| Repair | Typical Cost | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Battery replacement | RM80 – RM180 | ✅ Excellent |
| SSD upgrade (from HDD) | RM125 – RM250 | ✅ Excellent |
| RAM upgrade (4GB → 8GB) | RM89 – RM159 | ✅ Excellent |
| Screen replacement | RM150 – RM350 | ✅ Good |
| Hinge repair | RM80 – RM250 | ✅ Good |
| Keyboard replacement | RM80 – RM200 | ✅ Good |
The Real Cost of a New Laptop
A decent replacement laptop in Malaysia starts at around RM2,000–RM2,500 for something with similar performance to a well-maintained 4-year-old machine. Factor in:
Setting up Windows preferences from scratch
Re-installing and activating all software
Transferring files (and the risk of losing some)
Learning a new keyboard layout
Time cost of the whole process
Suddenly that RM350 repair looks a lot more attractive.
